bookish_dragonAnnathea's an old character of mine, a cleric/fighter of Kiri-Jolith, hoping to get in the Knights of Solamnia. She was rather fun to play. I always had a weakness for paladins, a class that as such doesn't exist on Krynn.
Born into a noble family without much money, Annathea was the second and last child to bear the name of Winterwar (Family-motto: ‘Nothing stands in the way of honour’). Her mother died shortly after giving birth to her, her health giving out on her. Being left with a toddling boy, Saxon, and an infant, her father quickly remarried, but the new marriage proved to be childless. This didn’t please the stepmother, Kyreth, too much, and relations between her and the two children were strenuous at best.
As years went by, Saxon grew up to be a fighter with aspirations to join the Knights, a long-standing Winterwar-tradition. As a squire of the Crown, he got sent out during the War of the Lance, to help out a beleaguered village. He never came back from this, and was declared dead after reports from survivors detailing the total destruction of the village.
Annathea was away from home for clerical training when this happened, much against her father’s wish. He hadn’t allowed her to do so, but for once Kyreth intervened on behalf of her stepdaughter, wanting to see the other child leave the house too. The news of Saxon’s death broke her father, and Annathea grieved for the loss of her brother. She returned home for the funeral. The atmosphere there wasn’t pleasant. There were slight implications that Saxon had died in dishonour, and Annathea resolved to join the Knights in his place and clear the name of her family. Also, her father’s protectiveness of his daughter increased, seeking to marry her off to another noble’s son in order to preserve the family name. He didn’t have much luck in finding someone who was willing to take Annathea’s name instead of keeping his own, but her father found someone who did, in exchange for the title the Winterwar-family.
Annathea didn’t much like this, but no protestations, not even with Kyreth’s help, swayed her father’s decision, and she got formally engaged to the young man, a second son from a nearby family. They met, and eventually formed a sort of friendship. Still, she wanted to finish her training, and eventually enter the Knighthood in memory of her brother. Her fiancé gave her permission, in the hope that she would grow out of this and be content to settle down with him, and she returned to seminary, where she eventually graduated as a cleric of Kiri-Jolith.
Why I put her here? I'm trying to get myself more into the habit of writing things, and like I said, I quite liked her. Backgrounds can be rather fun to write, after I get done cursing and grunting because I have no clue where I want to go with a character. And the whole nature of a background means it's more focused to a certain goal: why is he/she doing what s/he doing at the start of the game? Hence why this one's not expansive: she was only first-level in the beginning.
