Poor John Smith. His whole life turned upside-down, no more Joan, only emptiness and being insufferable. I can't blame him for reacting as he did. He was a person, demmit, and not just a story, a cover for the Doctor.
And the boys, all those boys who were there, a year away from the Big War. Those boys, and Latimer helping Hutchinson, and then at the monument, with the Doctor and Martha standing there. Tears, I tell you. I am such a sap.
I wouldn't have gone with the Doctor either, if I were Joan. Being near him, looking like the man you loved, occasionally seeing a glimpse of John Smith in the Doctor's mannerisms...it'd drive me crazy. Gutwrenching, it was.
