Chapter 3

Slowly the darkness in her brain faded. Hermione blinked. White. There was a lot of white out there. Her eyes shut again, she frowned. What had happened? Where was she? She opened her eyes for real this time and looked around. White it remained. Grabbing her head she sat up on the bed.

“You’re awake.” A face swam into focus. Black hair above black eyes, a friendly and open face.

“Where am I?” Hermione immediately cringed at the cliché-ness of the question. “Who are you?”

“Yer aboard the TARDIS. I’m Jamie,” the face opposite her said.

“The TARDIS?” Faint images of Saturday-evenings spent cowering behind the couch delurked in Hermione’s mind. “You mean it’s real?”

Jamie looked surprised. “Of course it is. Where else would we be? Mighty cold in space otherwise.”

“But I thought…” While trying to order her thoughts she looked at Jamie for a focus. He was sitting opposite the bed, wearing a white shirt and a kilt. She found herself wondering whether he was wearing anything under it and how she could best find out. Nice strong legs protruded from under the kilt. He smiled while she looked at him.

“You thought what?” he asked.

“That it was just made up. I don’t know.” She lay back down, noticing for the first time that she wasn’t wearing her robe, just her school-uniform. She was glad for that, the robe did nothing for her figure. She caught Jamie staring at her from the corner of her eye and grinned inwardly. “You like what you see?” she purred, teasingly and wiggled a bit for emphasis.

Jamie blushed, but didn’t look away. She really was a sight for sore eyes. “Euhm yes, well that is to say. Not that I mean to say that you’re not. Euhm, yes. Yes. “ He stopped, realising he was blabbering.

‘Gotcha,’ Hermione thought to herself. “Oh, just come over here and kiss me,” she said, winking. He blushed a deeper red and bent over to kiss her cheek. “No, a proper kiss, silly.” She giggled and laying one hand on his cheek, brought her mouth to his.

Neither of them noticed Victoria standing in the doorway, her mouth in a perfect ‘O’.

Victoria wandered the hallways of the TARDIS, still angry over what had happened earlier. How dare Jamie take that woman on-board? They should have just left her there. She wasn’t their responsibility, after all. If there had been danger there, it must have been her own fault anyway. Once inside the TARDIS Jamie had carried the mystery-woman to one of the smaller bedrooms and laid her carefully on the bed. He’d taken off the dark robe, so “she’d be more comfortable”, revealing a red-and-gold school uniform, a colour-combination which was quite tacky in Victoria’s opinion, while the Doctor looked through the book bag.

“It seems her name is Hermione Granger,” the Doctor said, closing one of the woman’s notebooks. “And she goes to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.”

“She’s a witch? But that’s not possible. There’s no such thing as magic,” Victoria’d said.

“On the contrary, there is. Do not presume to think you know all there is. You are not me.”

Through this all Jamie sat next to the bed, looking intently at this ‘Hermione’, paying no attention to the others. Victoria felt a new surge of jealousy well up inside her as she thought back to that moment, turning a corner which led her away from the pool. He should have been paying attention to her, he didn’t even know that other woman!

“Jamie?” the Doctor had said. “Will you stay with Hermione while I go and see what exactly the code was for?”

“Aye I will, Doctor,” Jamie replied. He pulled something out his pocket. “Doctor, this was lying near her. What is it?”

The Doctor took the hourglass from Jamie’s hand and poked it with his sonic screwdriver. “It appears to be some sort of time twister. Much like the TARDIS, but smaller and more primitive.”

“Could that have been why the code went off?” Jamie asked, eagerly. Too eagerly, to Victoria’s taste.

“Not as such, but it could have played a part in it. We need to go back and find out what’s going on there.”

“Do we really? You said yourself it’s dangerous there, Doctor,” Victoria said.

“That’s why we have to. Maybe they need help,” Jamie said.

“Quite right, Jamie.”

“I still don’t see the point,” Victoria mumbled. Jamie heard her, though.

“Yer just jealous yer not the only woman onboard anymore,” he snapped at her. She’d turned red and stormed out of the room. Now here she was, wandering the TARDIS forlornly. How dare they not listen to her! Her treacherous feet brought her back to the small bedroom, where she became rooted to the spot and her mouth fell open at the sight of the scene that awaited her. How dare that brazen harridan kiss her Jamie? Victoria vowed she would have her revenge for this. She was about to open her mouth and shriek something, preparing to storm into the room and tear the slut’s hair out, when the Doctor burst into the room. Hermione and Jamie leisurely broke off the kiss, much to the Doctor’s amusement.

“You’re awake then, miss Granger. Come along, all of you. I’ve found out what the code was for.” With that, the Doctor left again.
